Light acoustic rock folk
I play guitar and sing against backings that I have created using various software tools. I am therefore a home recorder primarily concerned with minting decent recordings of my own songs rather than a performer.

Story behind the song
In the last year two of my daughters have got married and of course, when the pain in my wallet wasn't blotting out all else, I did occasionally think about the commitment they were taking. I guess after you've been married yourself for a few years you forget the significance of the step in your life at the time. So the idea of 'On The Threshold' was born. I made a mistake in the lyrics of starting each line with a sustained 'I' or 'We' and it didn't have quite the dramatic effect I'd intended. It gave instead a vaguely hypnotic effect and certainly showed the weaknesses in my voice. So to disguise this (I'm being honest here...) I thickened the voice up with a stereo doubling with a slight delay. It give the voice a slightly otherworldliness and adds some texture to the sustained notes. The guitar is tuned to Double Dropped D which is a tuning that adds to the spaciness of the sound. Otherwise the song is pretty much as intended. I hope it brings someone some pleasure and that the lyrics provoke a bit of reflection back to those heady times of being on the threshold yourself.
Lyrics
I cannot see… what it is that you see in me I cannot be… half the man that you think you see I cannot know… exactly what way our lives will go I cannot say… all the things that might get in our way I can only try… to do the right thing once before I die I do not mind… all the things that I leave behind I shan’t regret… all the things that haven’t happened yet We will be more… than all the different things we were before We must prevail… let’s give ourselves no time to stall or fail We must declare… to give ourselves to this life we share This is what it means your life to dare Open up your soul and lay it bare To give your heart but think the bargain fair To submerge your needs and give another care And yet come up still keen to take the air
