Some soldiers in a far away country question what they are doing there.
Committed and passionate singer songwriter of new songs from traditional inspiration
Berni is a singer songwriter of passionate and committed songs.
Story behind the song
I had heard this beautiful song by Tonis Magis, the Estonian singer, and felt inspired to write English lyrics to it. Later I learned from my friend Robert Jurjendal (Tonis' guitarist) that I had captured the spirit - if not the letter - of the original. Tonis was apparently very pleased with my efforts too - always nice to get approval.
The song was not written about any specific conflict - but it would appear to be particularly appropriate right now.
Lyrics
In Some Far Field
My love you don't need me to tell you,
I'm thinking of you all back home.
Nothing else here seems to matter -
Why we came here least of all.
Even the bells here sound different,
The landscape's barren and bare.
There are no trees to match our beeches,
Our rolling hills beyond compare.
They say that we're liberators,
Then why do we need to mount guard?
Why do the locals resent us?
Why are their looks cold and hard?
We daren't go walking in the city,
Except in groups of two or three;
And they say our mates sent home in coffins,
Died defending liberty.
You ask if I keep all your letters,
Yes, and I've read each one a thousand times,
What you call "the boring details" -
Are the things that are keeping me alive.
When you next walk down our high street,
Greet everyone you meet for me.
Tell them I long to tread the cobbles,
Of a place I might never see more.
