Story behind the song
I've been vocal over my years as an MC about me and my father not fully getting along or understanding each other. In this song I take swipes at the fact neither of us attempt to make an effort to get closer. Its done over three verses as my mother, me, then my grandmother (his mother). This is the deepest song I ever write and put my whole heart into it. The outcome is blatent as not an attempt of hatred but an attempt at finding contempt in the truth.
Lyrics
(Verse)
"Why not try raising your son? He grown up wrong//
Your the reason he so messed up in songs//
I can't take all the yelling, screaming, fussing//
Its feels like none of this means nothing//
He wants a father, not a stranger living in the house//
He wants a man to raise him, not knock his teeth out//
Can't you see, he's scared of you now//
Scared to death of what you'll do now//
He's grown so tall, he's almost 19//
Now he's thinking about leaving, he can see//
That he's stuck doing no good, trying so hard//
He doesn't understand why you hate him so bad//
He wants his dad, what child doesn't?//
He wanted you from the start, what child wouldn't?//
So pick up your act, time to be a man//
Show the love for your son, that only you can"//
{Instrumental}
(Verse)
I want my father, trapped in the mind of a troubled youth//
Doing crazy stuff, to draw attention from you//
I wouldn't mind a hug, or an "I love you"//
But it just doesn't seem to come, understandable//
I understood when I was in high school, dad//
Everytime I came home, you was bound to be mad//
I'm sorry that I lived this way, if I could take it back//
I would, if only I got to keep my dad//
What happened to how we used to be?//
I'm sure that act all stopped when I was three//
Thrown to the curb, because you had a daughter//
You do have two children you know, you oughter//
Keep both kids, close to your heart//
If only you had from the start//
I might cry at your funeral, then again maybe I won't//
You cry for family, for a stranger you don't//
{Instrumental}
(Verse)
"Hows my grandson? What you mean you don't know//
What you mean you never seen him grow//
He's in your home, paying cash to stay//
You mean to loving your own son is far out of your way?//
Your father loved you, you know that he did//
He raised you like he expected you to raise your kids//
Matthews in his room right now, you know what he's doing?//
Why not go find out, instead you sit here chewing//
Your jaw about something, talking about work//
When your sons in the world, getting ignored for words//
I bet he wouldn't mind a hug, or an "I love you"//
But it just doesn't ever happen, understandable//
Because you got so hurt when your father passed//
And we know you can't replace him, but thats the past//
You have your own son, why can't you raise him?//
You think it's HIS fault, he had that life of sin?"//
{Instrumental}
