Story behind the song
This is a song about going down the road. I mean the long road, not some short back country lane. I mean a big damn highway. The longest widest highway you have ever seen. One that goes off into the sunset and comes back into the sunrise. A highway that runs through the middle of your soul. Oh yeah, there is also lots of potholes.
Lyrics
Down The Road Words: Fred Elkins & Charles MacConnach Music: Charles MacConnach Verse 1 Riding down the highway trying hard to see things my way It was just another Friday with a pocket full of my pay Down the road, on down the road She was young and tender as she leaned against my fender Catching all the signs I'd send her, nobody could defend her Down the road, on down the road Chorus We were on an auto pilot headed for a final crash I did everything she wanted she did everything I asked And when the dust had settled and the smoke had cleared my mind I went down the road one more time Down the road, on down the road Verse 2 The love was hot and heavy in the back seat of my Chevy And she said she never did see Why the others never would be Down the road, on down the road As she said thank you mister I was thinking how I'd kissed her And through my mental blister I knew how much I'd miss her Down the road, on down the road Repeat Chorus Verse 3 Well she said I'd like to follow And my beer had one more swallow With my stomach feeling hollow I said yes it's time to go Down the road, on down the road Well we're clicking off the miles Giving each other them smiles Yeah, we're loving all the while And we do it all in style Down the road, on down the road Repeat Chorus
