Story behind the song
The song tells the first part of the story of The Mariner in the comic 'Tales Of The Black Freighter'. For the lyrics I have used quotes from the comic itself.
Lyrics
Delirious, I saw the hell-bound ship's black sails against the yellow sky. And now I know, the stench of fire, and men's brains, and war. The waves about me were scarlet, foaming, horribly warm, Yet still the black ship's crew called out, "More Blood! More blood!" I need to escape. Embarking, heading east on the naked backs of murdered men. With dawn came the 'gulls, Drawn to the carrion upon which my transport rested. Lent speed by my hunger, I ripped one from the air. Stomach filled with raw meat, blood caked upon my chin, I drifted on towards home. Nothing would take it from me. Light-headed, I gazed into the inverted world beneath, Where drowned gulls circled. A madman with blood-caked lips gazed back at me. His eyes, his nose, his cheeks, Seemed individually familiar, But mercifully I could not piece them together. Not into a face I knew.
