acoustic folk rock
Dave Stannard plays the acoustic guitar and sings, by himself, all on his own. While he sings and plays, he also dances around a lot and is good fun to watch. He calls this "a performance"; most people agree. His songs are actually written by him, and not others, usually. Sometimes the songs turn out quite catchy and people sing them in the bath or play them on local radio shows.

Story behind the song
Earth Hour sorta snuck up on me last week and I only realised what was going on about halfway through. Turned off a few appliances and was reminded of the chorus to this song which I writ many moons ago. Unfortunately I've always found it to be too preachy to use - I'm not holier than *anyone*, so that sort of thing makes me uncomfortable. However, I've been listening to a lot of daft stuff recently - Jake Thackray and Loudon Wainwright III for example. Also since we've had a recent "recycling issue" I thought I'd take a more humourous tack and highlight modern UK domestic environmentalism. Oh yeah, the issue - round these parts we had 2 plastic recycling boxes. One yellow, for paper, tins etc and one red one for glass. Recently the council changed to using bags instead of the yellow box and about the same time someone stole our red box! Logically enough we started putting out the glass jars & bottles in the remaining yellow box instead. And they wouldn't take it away! The recycling operatives refused to pick up a large open box filled with glass just because it wasn't RED. Fixed it after a couple of phone calls and a bit of box decoration :)) Wrote on the side of the yellow box: "RED BOX"
Lyrics
I live on earth - I'm here to stay I can't afford to move away I love my stuff - hand made in china eat good food I drink fine wine but I read in the paper that my refrigerator spoils the world instead o keeping it fresh for later chlorofluorocarbon - s'difficult to speak and spell get it wrong - everyone is sure you're talking aerosols woah mother earth I'm sorry I'm as guilty as the other guys but if that's so how come they've got better cars than I We’re sitting up high and dry all watching the world swim by We’re sitting up high and dry but we won't be for long the turn is too strong for the tide If a tree fell in a forest and I didn't notice, would it make a sound? What if I block my ears and shut my eyes - what if I hum real loud? if the world wildlife fund started wrestling with my conscience and my wallet laid the smack down on both of them right there on the stair would you care to park your derriere on my little polar bear ok, you win - I'm economising I turned out my landing lights I hope our lear jet makes it down all right, tonight We’re sitting up high and dry All watching the world swim by We’re sitting up high and dry but we won't be for long the turn is too strong for the tide so here I am, I'm scrubbing my recycling - pulling all my trash apart into piles four different bags on four different trucks - into one big landfill thousands of miles away hey - I cut my thumb on the tin I washed, so at least something's going green! think I found out what causes tetanus - that's irony We’re sitting up high and dry All watching the world swim by We’re sitting up high and dry wouldn't it be easier if some evil genius guy was firing up his deathray from a cloudship in the sky demanding 30 zillion or else all the penguins die! nooooooooooooooooooooooo! Mumble! Pingu!! We shall save you! how? by harnessing the power of wind, wave and geothermal energy and blowing stuff up because there's plenty of wind that's not powering anything
