Here's the full original version of one of my old favourites, in all its overproduced glory. I worked on this recording for about a month straight and in the end it sounded like a bee in a tin can. Mix was rescued last year.

acoustic folk rock
Dave Stannard plays the acoustic guitar and sings, by himself, all on his own. While he sings and plays, he also dances around a lot and is good fun to watch. He calls this "a performance"; most people agree. His songs are actually written by him, and not others, usually. Sometimes the songs turn out quite catchy and people sing them in the bath or play them on local radio shows.

Story behind the song
I was sick of "Sedative TV", game shows, talent competitions - you could be the next big thing. Sit there and salivate over what you could be, and yet could never be. Or, if you're nearly there & have the talent; you can come here, my precious, slip on this velvet collar and chain - sing for the drooling mob Now I realise that is slightly incoherent and frothy, it's just how I remember feeling at the time (1995). These days I'm happy if everyone else is happy, yeah?
Lyrics
Come on down, come on down Welcome to the gameshow here's to your good health Lose that frown, lose that frown Everybody's happy in the gameshow, your chance to better yourself Take the money or open the box Take one last lonely look at all those things you lost You never win on the gameshow Turn the card, turn the card You could cruise around the world in your armchair, but you won't get far Big money, big money You'd be in it if the whole game wasn't unfair, never be a superstar Star prize is still well out of reach You must have won at least a thousand zeroes each You never win on the gameshow Just keep your eyes glued to the screen This fifteen minutes of fame is all you'll ever need Now wipe away that manic grin You never win on the gameshow
