Story behind the song
The Original Onyx. James Latimer - Lead Guitar, & Vocals. Tony Wiese - Guitar, & Lead Vocals. Jack Mondlak - Keyboards. Fred Janus - Flute, & Saxophone. John Flannagan - Bass Guitar. Bob Holzner - Drums, & Percussion. This song was recorded live at the Parkside Inn on August 14, 1979. Recorded by Mike Mills with assistance from Phil Sypniewski. This is a song I, Bob Holzner, wrote the lyrics to when Glenn Spence was in the band. We were have difficulties jamming together and I wanted to make my mark musically in the band. I worked with Jack Mondlak in coming up with the music for this song. Jack sat at his piano at his house and I articulated what I was feeling for the music to fit around the lyrics. I would vocally convey to Jack some stops and parts and he would write the parts on the piano. Jack then filled in the gaps to create the song you hear at this site, however, the song didn't reach its full potential until James added his lead guitar playing to the song. We then arranged sax parts for our smoking saxophone player, Fred Janus. Unfortunately, Fred's flute playing was not all that and is sadly also reflected in this song, ouch. I eventually wrote the lyrics to three more songs (The Ordeal, The Dream, and The Return) continuing the story started in Broken Toys that were know as the Broken Toys or Derek medley. These songs were often played late in the set and often before our final song of the night - One Step Beyond (Drum Solo Song).
