Story behind the song
Be careful what you ask for - you may get it. In this case, I was fortunate, in that I didn't get what I asked for: I had been single for a long time, when I met a beautiful 19 year old slip of a girl - tall and waifishly thin, a pert smile. I was entranced. In my loneliness, she became almost an obsession to me. I needed her, so very badly. In effect, she stole my life - but she turned me away (she was looking for a wimp to rule - and later found one! Rocks on the road, I'm afraid). Whereas her life since has been a staggering death march of bones and broken hearts (think of Cupid - with a machine gun!), my life has been quite solid, stable, and fairly fulfilling - and she cannot be part of it. In the end, you see, I stole her life - at least, the fulfilling one she could have had, with me. And I won't give it back! ...ever. - Alan Kim Cochran
Lyrics
The One Who Stole Your Life by Alan Kim Cochran I once knew you as the one who stole my life And I knew you as the one who cut me with the silvered knife Think you'd see the way to end your life extreme! Always denigrating verities, supreme Bones and broken hearts lie scattered in your train Keep your spirits high, psychotically vain... insane Many wanted me, but all eyes turned to you Expectations rise, but how to tame the shrew? And, I was thinking, I was meant to be your man But, unwisely, I was scrabbling at the bottom of the can Bones and broken hearts lie scattered in your train Keep your spirits high, psychotically vain... insane So I turned away, you led a willful life And I took to hand your cousin for my wife Now, I've a wealth of virtue, holding her in trust And you're banished, witness: your plans turn to dust Bones and broken hearts lie scattered in your train Keep your spirits high, psychotically vain... insane Bones and broken hearts lie scattered in your train Keep your spirits high, psychotically vain... insane And, now you know me for the one who stole your life And you know me for the one who cut you with the silvered knife Think you'd see the way to end your life extreme! Always denigrating verities, supreme And, now you know me for the one who stole your life And you know me for the one who cut you with the silvered knife Think you'd see the way to end your life extreme! Always denigrating verities, supreme Always denigrating verities, supreme Always denigrating verities, supreme Supreme
