hurdy gurdy and piano
I am a pianist who also plays hurdy gurdy and I like to combine the two instruments (this is not possible on my own in real time!). Putting chordal piano music against droning gurdy melodies makes for an interesting combination, with or without the rhythmic buzz which has to be used with some care.

Story behind the song
This hurdy gurdy tune in 5/4 was written by Renate Janssen and recorded in the medieval church of St George's Colegate, Norwich, UK, arranged and performed by myself (doubletracked) with production by Paul Keeler of Sugati Sound. The small organ was built in 1801 on a gallery at the rear of the church and is in its original condition. Its mellow acoustic seems perfectly suited to the cool Georgian interior of the building. I was fortunate to be allowed to have a go on this instrument, and thought it would be interesting to combine it with the rasping sound of the hurdy gurdy. Perhaps the start of a whole new genre.
