[4/4, a little bouncy and manic]
ME AND RUFUS, AND BURNIN’ DOWN THE HOUSE
--J. Wrabek
[THE RAP: This is for Sara the librarian, who had a house fire a couple weeks ago. And like most tragedies, there was a song in it. She and Rufus, her English bulldog, weren’t there; they were playing music. (Actually, only Sara was playing music. Rufus was just hanging out.) She gave me the trigger for this, when she mentioned Rufus wasn’t cooking…]
1.
Rufus wasn’t cooking—we got dog food at the store,
And he’s a real good dog, and doesn’t burn down houses any more;
It’s true that it was someone else that called in the alarm,
And Rufus chased the fire truck—but he didn’t mean no harm.
2.
Rufus is my bestest friend—no arsonist is he;
He isn’t like those other dogs they show you on T.V.;
I sent him to obedience school, and he learned lots of stuff
Like how to pee and poop outside, and not burn houses up.
CHORUS:
Me and Rufus got to find another place in town;
We promise that we’ll keep it nice, and we won’t burn it down;
His bark could wake the neighborhood, don’t need no smoke alarm,
And he likes to chase the fire trucks, but he’d never do ‘em harm.
3.
Rufus wasn’t cooking—he wasn’t even there,
And he can’t reach the burners ‘less I help him with the chair;
He never liked the furniture, since he was a pup,
But he knows that I’d replace it if he ever burned it up.
CHORUS:
Me and Rufus got to find another place in town;
We promise that we’ll keep it nice, and we won’t burn it down;
His bark could wake the neighborhood, don’t need no smoke alarm,
And he likes to chase the fire trucks, but he’d never do ‘em harm.
4.
Rufus wasn’t cooking—I won’t let him near the stove
Ever since that curry thing a couple years ago;
He’d never chew the wiring unless he was alone,
And he would’ve put the fire out if only he was home.
CHORUS:
Me and Rufus got to find another place in town;
We promise that we’ll keep it nice, and we won’t burn it down;
His bark could wake the neighborhood, don’t need no smoke alarm,
And he likes to chase the fire trucks, but he’d never do ‘em harm.
REPEAT CHORUS TO END
