All You Need Is A Good Dog
For all you dog lovers. OK, so it's not *all* about just having a good dog, but the dog gets top billing! Hope you enjoy.
Greetings! "Midnight Closet Project" finally came about after years of threatening that one of these days I was going to set up an in house studio and start doing some recording. About a year ago I finally got serious and began putting the project together. Feel free to leave comments, I'm interested in your feedback. Hope you enjoy. - Mark
Story behind the song
Dedicated to 'Kruger' and all the other good dogs of the world that enriched our lives during their lifetimes.
Lyrics
When I was just a little boy, I knew a man named Curtis Jones
Curtis lived in a one room shack with his wife and a dog named Bones
You know he was poor as dirt, but his spirit was wild and free
Curtis never owned a thing in his life, but he always had a smile for me
One day I asked old Curtis, what makes you such a happy man?
He looked into my eyes and then he took me by the hand
You want to know my secret? Listen and Ill tell you how
Son, if you can only remember three things, remember what I tell you now
All you need is a good dog, and somebody to love, and a dream to carry you on
All you need is a good dog, and somebody to love, and a dream to carry you on
Don't you know that a rich life is no mystery, you can have it if you just believe
Cause all you need is a good dog, and somebody to love, and a dream to set you free
The time did fly as the years went by and I forgot what Curtis said
But one dark day I heard the news that Curtis Jones was dead
When I got back, the shack was bare, and stillness filled the air
But a mournful howl from somewhere near told me good dog Bones was there
Up upon a hill out back was the grave of Curtis Jones
And laying there upon it was the sad-eyed good dog Bones
There upon the headstone, were these words chiseled bold and tall
Here lies Curtis, now dead and gone, he lived the richest life by far
All he needed was a good dog, and somebody to love, and a dream to carry him on
Yes he had a good dog, and somebody to love, and a dream to carry him on
He always knew that a rich life was no mystery, he could have it if he just believed
All he needed was a good dog, and somebody to love, and a dream that would set him free
I wish I could have lived my life the way that Curtis said
But somehow I got sidetracked in my race to get ahead
The pretty girls, the fancy house, the fast cars in a line
Could never fill the empty place within my heart and mind
But as I stood beside his grave I heard old Curtis say
Its not too late to change your fate, get back upon the way
I looked at Bones, he looked at me, and something passed between
Now Bones and I walk side by side and tomorrow is a brand new day
Cause all I need is a good dog, and somebody to love, and a dream, to carry me on
All I need is a good dog, and somebody to love, and a dream, to carry me on
Now I know that a rich life is no mystery, I can have it if I just believe
Cause all I need is a good dog, and somebody to love, and a dream, to set me free
(Fade out to dialog between author and Bones)
Bones! How many times do I have to tell you to stay off the bed? You're not livin' in a shack anymore, you know, we've got new standards. Oh, you think that's real funny, don't you? What? You want to go out again? You were just out fifteen minutes ago! I know you don't *need* to go out. You're just yanking my chain, aren't you? Who's got the collar on here anyway?
Cool groove, nice strat guitar sounds, really clean and cool. Great production and vocals are great. Really enjoyed it... Great job!
