Lord I thank You
Well I got my first taste of gin when I was barely five
Bouncin on Grandpappy's knee outside the Five & Dime
By fourteen I was lit up like a New York show marquee
Crying Lord help me I'm so blind I cannot see
I met a dark haired devil in a drunked-up reverie
She nearly took me for it all before God rescued me
She showed me things I should not know
And other things I could
But God stepped in and burned fate's chase
Deep in a dark Ohio wood
Lord keep me from drinking
And help me on the way
Gives me strength and wisdom
To stay sober ev'ry day
On solid rock build me a house
To keep me from the cold
Lord I thank you
From the bottom of my soul
I cannot do this on my own
It's much too hard for me
I have no source to lean upon
Short of God's great mercy
He reached a hand out from the sky
To pull me back from hell
And gave me eyes so I could see
To tell this story well
The Lord keeps me from drinking
He helps me on the way
He gives me strength and wisdom
To stay sober ev'ry day
On solid rock he builds a house
To keep me from the cold
Lord I thank you
From the bottom of my soul
