Story behind the song
Orval Prophet great Canadian country singer (Mademoiselle & My Lois & Me) told me all about the train as he was born and raised in Edwards ON. Canada and the train passed right behind his back yard. The names I mention in the songs are real names about people who worked on that railroad as he knew them personally. The man introducing the song "All aboard the New York central destination Messena New York" is no other than Hank Rivers (Lariviere) Canada's Singing Soldier God rest is soul as he has now passed away. Musicians: Piano Harmonica (Terry Mc Cann) Drums (Buddy Mc Cann) Piano (Ted Gerow) Lead & vocals ( Dan Loyer)
Lyrics
Hear that New York central groanin Slowin down at Russell Station Tar paper shacks where time has stopped Fifty years ago Everything around has flourished But the old train is all finished When the chug a lug of coal fire Was replaced by diesel fuel She was a school ride to the children The milk run to the farmer Painted like lion Jim Forsythe the conductor From Ottawa to Messenna Bringin mail and loved ones to ya Folks ran out the back porch When they heard her whistle whine Chorus: You can't hear her engines roar For she's gone for evermore Oh! how time has slipped away You can them in the yard Obsolete and rusted hard Snow and rain has killed this train Verse; Bernie Campbell was station master Dave preston was a fireman And in my past life I was Casey Jones Now I'm a railroad country picker Till my life is up I'll wonder My next time around I wanna be an engineer
