Story behind the song
This song was originally the basis for Trust. When we started working in our studio, however, the guitarist/sound engineer (and myself after I argued about it) decided the lyrics and vocal patterns did not fit. We were going to scrap the entire piece. While mastering and laying down guitar tracks, however, the guitarist really liked the beats and how he could jam to it. He called and told me he would put some lyrics together (which is something he had wanted to do for a while anyhow). The inspiration behind the lyrics came from what was happening to us at the time. We were young and partying a lot. So the idea was --what would happen if you totally gave in to alcohol and completely lost control of your life? The song is about someone who did (nobody we knew personally). Also - the whole Chains concept album was about a downward spiral with (hopefully) something sort of happy at the end. So "This Is" fit nicely somewhere in the middle. We recorded the vocals on a Friday night. There was a very specific amount of whiskey required to get "Just the right sound...." - or so I was told...and happily obliged. At the end of the song you will hear a buzz followed by some very interesting guitar sounds. What you are hearing is a guitar being played by pliers - and the subsequent removal of strings by aforementioned instrument. I think that we also used some form of electric drill while he was using the pliers (can not remember).

That weird buzzing guitar sound was done with an electric razor, a Braun to be exact (not a drill), it was totally destroyed after recording this song. Ah to be young again!
