I was watching ESPN after work one evening, and when supper was ready, I left the TV on when I went into the kitchen. Minutes later, I heard a laugh track coming from the other room. Since I didn't know of any ESPN shows with a laugh track, I went back in the living room to check. The TV was now tuned to "Married. . .With Children," and my cat was sitting on the couch. Now, I understand how a cat can operate a remote, but what was sweet little Lizzie doing watching that show?

Story behind the song
On facebook, Tobi Vale linked to Carrie Brownstein's blog on NPR. Carrie presented a challenge: http://www.npr.org/blogs/monitormix/2009/11/its_so_easy_to_record_a_song.html While we may not agree as to whether new recording technology makes music better or worse (see Douglas Wolk's fantastic essay), I think we'd all be willing to admit that technology has made making music a whole lot easier, cheaper and more accessible. We can be more agile, impulsive, nimble, reactionary and spontaneous than ever before. Right? Well, that's the idea anyway. So let's try! Here at NPR Music, we could have given you a mere 24 hours to do this, but we'll be generous and allow you the entire weekend in which to record an original song. Here are the rules: Your song needs to include one of the following words: dog firecracker lamp shade Japan NPR Your song can be any genre or length. Please include the name of the song and how you'd like to be credited. Send your songs to: monitormix@npr.org All songs are due by this Sunday, Nov. 15, at 8 p.m. ET. We'll feature the songs next week as part of our continuing Decade In Music coverage. Thanks, and have fun! 11:50 AM ET | 11-13-2009 Icepac wrote these lyrics, and Sknoblogger wrote the music and recorded the song. Note how he cleverly inserted "dings" when the magic words were sung. Icepac says he has a lot in common with Carrie Brownstein. She used to be in a band called Sleater-Kinney. Icepac used to drive on a road called Sleater-Kinney.
Lyrics
We went to Niagara I took along Viagra Our trip was a second honeymoon Though it was kind of risky I was hot and frisky and we had a naked lunch at noon Chorus: Ima let you finish But I think you ought to know We did it for the party We did it for the show I used to be a slacker Now I'm real firecracker and NPR will play this song even though it blows. we got completely pissed Danced al fresco in the mist Its the most fun that I've had in many years drank gin and lemonade And put on a lampshade You can keep Japan, I like it right here chorus Bridge: We drove up to Toronto Horny in our hummer Like the Lone Ranger and Tonto In the dog days of summer Chorus (repeats until end)
