Story behind the song
This movement exploits the whole-tone scale from which the music for the Requiem is derived. The augmented fourth, the tritone or "devil's interval" which results, is used extensively to give a demonic feel. It is cast as a wild gallop as with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Death, Famine, Conquest and War who will appear at the last day. Arriving from a distance, they sweep the listener away as the old plain-chant appears over ferocious drumming, finally vanishing as they came and ushering in the next movement the Lacrymosa (yet to be posted).
Lyrics
Dies irae. dies illa Solvet saeclum in favilla Teste David cum sybilla. Quantus tremor est futurus Quando judex est venturus Cuncta stricte discussurus. Dies irae, dies illa calamitatis et miseriae, dies magna et amara valde
