Story behind the song
I went to this little indie, hipster-before-hipster-was-hipster club full of art kids and poets and artists and the like in New Orleans (guess where it was located). And at some point, I stepped outside to breath some of that cold November air and just started writing about what I saw, the people, the bleak optimism, etc.
Lyrics
Sitting outside on Decatur and Marigny
Watching the crawl of another freight train.
Wasting away on Decatur and Marigny
With all of the other lives living in vain,
The rebel still looking for causes to fight for
The poets still writing the world that they see
The Burnout, the Begger, the Artist, the Doorman
The band plays inside plays with or without me.
CHORUS:
And the cars drive by
And the world rolls by
And time flies by
And we remain just the same
On Decatur and Marigny
Lonely guitars choke on cigarette smoke
The Cabbies look elsewhere when they pass our way
The Painter makes love to her charcoal and canvas
While the Model lies naked with nothing to say.
So we live here alone in our crowds of like minds
And we swear that we'll show them we're right all Along
and we dream of the changes our small lives can make
When we finally get moving to finish the song.
CHORUS
And the headlights die
And the world will die
And time will die
And we're lost in the dark outside the Ark
On Decatur and Marigny
