Story behind the song
Letterman (Calo, Moneeks Red Lounge) Recorded at: The Sonic Factory With: Moneeks Red Lounge for the In Your Hands EP Contribution: bass, backing vocals How: Warwick Streamer Jazzman bass: Full miced Eden World Tour rig + DI. Recorded with the drums in a large room. MM pickup bias, selector top position. Written by Steve Calo. This was the second attempt to get a completed version of this song. An earlier recording from the time when I was only doing sessions for the band was ultimately scrapped. The first version featured a different session drummer and I used a different bass on that occasion. The song itself underwent only very minor changes before this second attempt was made. This song illustrates the framework that I used when creating the bass part for songs by this band. My main focus was to make the bass deep in register, and to keep it simple and unobtrusive. My other aim (when possible) was to come up with identifying bass patterns that could possibly serve as string lines. Producer George Martin used to tell The Beatles to think symphonically when coming up with their instrumental parts for songs, and it was in this spirit that I approached Letterman. The repeating ostinato that appears in the verses is simple, but at the same time is one of the most satisfying bass parts that I have ever written. Due to the melodic nature of the bass in the verses I deliberately kept the chorus very simple, with many long notes, whole notes, and spaces allowing the song to breathe. I also made a point of playing as low as the key of the song would allow in order to maintain the feeling of sonic immensity. I added double tracked low harmony vocals, as well as the high Im not so sure line in the last chorus, at a later date. My vocal recording session for the entire EP was wrapped up in about 40 minutes because I knew my parts well and they were not difficult to sing. As a live song Letterman was a flagship for the band's very good three part vocal harmony ability. To my knowledge this band is still a going concern.
