Lyrics
The Joke of the Century Ah! This whole damn thing is a mystery! You were brought into this world all clean, new and innocent. You came here to fulfill a destiny, but there was no road map and no instruction manual. You leaned on the parents you chose when you decided to incarnate in the first place. You knew then all about your purpose here, but with birth comes forgetfulness and there you hopped onto the roller coaster named, ‘the next 30 some years.’ You never saw it as a journey at first and 'Oh G-d!’ you must have thought, ‘Why me? Why now?’ CHORUS You’re not alone no, you’re not in pieces No! And this is no crime when you find out, You just feel like you’re the joke of the century In those early days you were shaped by circumstance and the teaching of your elders. Back then you may have thought, ‘Wow! They know everything! They are so big! Will I ever grow up to be like them? This was your innocence and from that day on, you began cutting your umbilical cord and straying farther away from home. Your memory was like a lighthouse. You were safe while you could still see it’s flashing beacon. You’d sailed some rough seas in your short time! The mother thought it would help you grow strong! Even then you knew what had been taken. You denied the existence of those dark clouds, the coat behind the bedroom door and the shame of the night before. The mother is long gone and you feel less alone. You’ve returned home – that sacred space and now you begin that second step, turning right before the roller coaster and paying 50c to enter the playground. All the rides are free and you climb on a Ferris wheel called, ‘today is the first day of the rest of my life.’ It moves in perfect circles and at the top of the crescent you can just make out the lighthouse far in the distance. Like the sun and the earth it keeps on turning.
