Story behind the song
The origins of these pieces are somewhat convoluted. Originally conceived as settings for female voices, they were designed for performance by the united choirs of the Federation of the Berkshire Womens’ Institutes, with whom my mother sang. Sadly, the “dear ladies” found the settings “a bit tricky” and “a bit modern” despite my deliberately crafting them in a traditional and very singable manner. Ironic that, since the George Butterworth fund, who at that time, were supporting my first performances found the pieces “not modern enough.” Thereafter, the Canticles were rejigged for S.A.T.B. choir and orchestra with the intention of their being used for a Festival Evensong, such as were at one time held in our great Cathedrals, post-war. Regrettably, these sort of occasions have largely disappeared, mostly for reasons of cost, and are now almost entirely confined to televised events. The chances of a live performance are, therefore, I’m afraid, remote. However, with the advent of computer technology, digital recording and sampling, particularly of EastWest sample sets and the revolutionary software programme WordBuilder, it is possible now to make a passably authentic recording. Festive, rather old-school, often exultant, sometimes reflective, with the obligatory boys’ solo, these settings of the Evening Canticles are uncomplicatedly direct and accessible.
Lyrics
MAGNIFICAT My soul doth magnify the Lord: and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his hand-maiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. For his mercy is on them that fear him: throughout all generations. He hath shewn strength with his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat: and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things: and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel: as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed, for ever. Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. NUNC DIMITTIS Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace: according to thy word. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, Which thou hast prepared: before the face of all people; To be a light to lighten the Gentiles: and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.
