Trash-pop, guitar rock and melodic miscellany.
Not so much a band as a bloke with a guitar and a laptop, The Smivets deliver a genre-bending blend of pop, rock, punk, prog and many other monosyllables.

Story behind the song
Not an even numbered time signature in sight (her odds aren't even handed?) Posted for the May 2010 Coconut Blues Club British Challenge - jolly good show to Jude and all the smashing gels and geezers at CBC for setting up another corker. What exactly is British music then? I suppose, being British meself and everything, I could trot out any old cobblers and it would still qualify. I already had this tune down as my next project, and was thinking it had a sort of British flavour to it, when cor blimey up pops Jude with the challenge. Serendipity? Rather! Serendipity means "a propensity for making lucky discoveries whilst looking for something else", but if anyone knows what these lyrics mean please let me know because I haven't got a scooby. More tea, vicar?
Lyrics
As she walks by I dream of the sapphire sky Effortlessly She spins and bedazzles me Then she's gone It's like the sun never shone But after a little while You know that I'll be fine When Serendipity smiles Hard to ignore Her chance encounters that Fortuitously See her paths intersect with me Touching the curve You only get the luck you deserve In all probability She will see I'll be fine when Serendipity smiles (yeah) Her odds aren't even handed Her deviation isn't standard And though she defies prediction She's my perfect Contradiction And though she defies prediction She's my perfect Contradiction When Serendipity smiles (yeah)

Very British, no doubt. I hear a bit of Yes, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull in there. Really like the mixed and layered time signatures. Excellent work!

I say, how delightfully spiffing old boy :D No comparisons, it's right up there with any I could make. Another Smivet classic, twists and turns, smiles and gurns, and a perfect production as always. *Yoink* ;)

This is SO English in it's quirky timing and instrumentation. It also has a, 'dare I say it'? a very 1967/Flower power type of feel too. "Cups and Cakes" period of Spinal Tap. You've done it again Steve, brilliant and just up my street. Cucumber sandwich anybody ?

Brilliant. Yeah, very British in the instrumentation, melody and the excellent use of timing. Great arrangement, very impressive work - a little bit of many things, but the biggest skill is in putting them together in just the right way - something you always manage to do. Really enjoyed this one.
