Hiss a few times to engage the movement of the solar plexus. Carry the hiss into a vocalized 'z'. From the vocalized 'z' sing the "aw" vowel on a 5-tone scale. The 'z' helps with the budgeting of airflow.
Then using the same amount of breath pressure sing the 5-tone scale starting on a 'Ng' (like the 'ng' in the word 'song'). The 'Ng' helps to establish the proper onset of sound and increases resonance.
This exercise can be repeated by shifting up the scale in semitone steps each time until you reached the end of the comfortable range. Then go back down the same way, back to the starting key.
