Story behind the song
Written by Washboard Sam (Robert Brown), and recorded by the Midnight Ramblers in 1936 with Bill Broonzy on guitar. Our version is taken from the Washboard Sam 78 recorded a month later with Broonzy on guitar. Broonzy was a prolific blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist who began playing country blues in the 1920s to mostly black audiences. Through the ‘30s and ‘40s his style successfully transitioned to a blues sound popular with white audiences. In the 1950s a return to his traditional folk- roots made him one of the leading figures of the emerging American folk music revival and an international star.
