A funky, little tune about (you guessed it), a girl I used to know.
Rock, pop, guitar rock, songwriter,
I'm a self-publishing songwriter actively looking for established artists to license and record my songs for major release. I have been writing songs for over 20 years, but have only recently begun to work on getting demos recorded. There are many more songs I'm working on that range from piano ballads to guitar rock, metal, pop and, to my surprise, even a country song. There are a ton of great songwriters out there, but when I listen to the radio, it seems to me that there are a lot of songs where the lyrics really aren't saying anything. In my humble opinion, the best songs are the ones that really use the music to pull the listener into the story of the song or the emotion the song is trying to convey. My songwriting philosophy is "Say something worth hearing".

Story behind the song
This tune was written about a girl I briefly dated who was sort of rediscovering herself and, I think, trying to figure things out. She was into painting that somehow gave me the idea to write a song about her journey and what it means to just be true to yourself.

Painting Shari Words and music by Steven Whitaker Copyright 2010 she's got a butterfly view from the 20th floor she's so many things I never thought I would adore an honest smile but her eyes they will reveal the mystery when the canvas starts to peel with beautiful lines she starts her best work yet she's got the wind in her face and every color in her head the city sleeps as her stars begin to shine I wonder if she knows she's painting herself this time you don't need anything but an open heart and honesty I can't take what you can't give you have the heart you're born with baby let it live sing your songs paint your dreams I will play along and be there if it's meant to be kiss your soul let it breath I will be the one only if it was meant to be if it was meant to be the darkness fades into an amber rise the wind never slept it stayed right by her side her masterpiece is just moments away I wonder if she knows she's painting a brand new day this silhouette of grace slips back to her skin how very precious these moments of zen to understand her is to open the sky such beautiful things were always meant to fly
