Lyrics
I shall not be humbled before you; Neither your greeting, nor your reproach are imperious before my soul. Know: we have become strangers since then. You have forgotten: to wipe the slate clean I shall not offer freedom; And so I have sacrificed years To your smile and eyes, And for too long I saw Hope of youth in you And how the whole world had begun to hate, That you loved more strongly. Who knows the moments, Spent at your feet, that, perhaps, took away the fire of inspiration! And replaced with what? Perhaps, by heavenly thoughts And by strength of mind convinced, I would give the world a wonderful gift, And for that I would receive immortality? To not repeat what was so gently promised You replaced its laurel crown, And ended finally! I am proud!.. Forgive! Love someone else, Dream to find love in another; So that I do not become a slave to what is earthly, and terrestrial. To foreign mountains, perhaps, Under the southern sky I shall leave; But we know each other, Too well to forget each other. I shall begin to enjoy passion And to everyone shall begin to swear; I shall laugh at everything, And not want to cry with anybody; I shall start to deceive godlessly, To not love, as I loved; My respect for women will change -- How else, when my angel has betrayed. I was ready to die, tormented, To fight the world at a bidding call, For your young hand -- Madness! -- once again I shake! Not knowing the cunning, I gave a soul to you; Did you know its worth? You knew that I did not know you! Mikhail Lermontov
