Story behind the song
The lyrics take their inspiration from the ideas in Man-Erg by Peter Hammill / Van der Graff Generator. I had been ignoring my rhythm playing for a year while concentrating on lead work. When I had added bass and rhythm as an exercise to a drum backing track I found a song needed to be let out.
Lyrics
There's a bad man inside my head
There's a real mad man inside my head
Mostly he's quiet and I don't know he's there
Mostly he's quiet so I don't have to care
But sometimes he wakes and his mad eyes stare at me
There's a good man inside my head
There's a real nice man inside my head
He's usually awake and there for me
He wishes me well and lets me be
But sometimes he leaves and the bad man comes to stay
The bad man's here he's come today
The bad man's here and he's come to play
Somebody please just come and help me
And lock him up and set me free
My mood is black and I just don't know what to do
And I too live inside my head
And I too live inside my head
I'm not a hero - I may be a fool
But I don't do no wrong as a general rule
Now I'm plagued by doubts and I don't know what to do
I'm just a man being gentle and kind
I'm just a man and I'm trying to find
The angels that are a part of me
That will soothe my mind and set me free
Can the bad man and the good man just get on and let me be.
