Watercress Thieves are currently a songwriting partnership made up of Malcolm Shipp & James Levan both from the South West of England. We have played together for many years and started writing semi-seriously in 2005, had to take a break whilst I lived overseas but now as of December 2007 we are working on a heap of new songs and planning to put together a full on Folk band in the new year 2008. So if you are into folk and play an acoustic instrument then do get in touch, multi instrumentalists with vocal abilities are the most welcome!
Band/artist history
I was in a few various soul bands and acoustic duos from 1993 to 2000 before getting a bit bored of it. I have always been a poet and decided recently to have a go at writing a song or two. James who is in Bristol, UK was the guitarist in my first band and we have remained close friends. I simply write a new song in my head, sing it to him and he finds the chords instantly, then we record it.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Only played two live gigs in 2007 and that was covers only, for 2008 we plan to play regularly but with at least 90% of our own catchy songs.
Your musical influences
James Taylor, Crowded House, River Detectives, Van Morrison, Kate Rusby, Oh there is so many I can't think of them all right now. I am influenced by clever lyricists and melody writers, a song has to have a strong clear vocal in my opinion.
What equipment do you use?
Guitars, mandolins, harmonicas and vocals.
Anything else?
Watch this page throughout December 07 & January 08 as we'll be recording better versions of the songs already here and uploading our new ones too.
